Ozymandias – Breaking Bad

Posted on September 23, 2013

From its heart-stomping mania born out of the dark depths of human despair,

to the tremendous acting, writing and framing,

Breaking Bad is one of my all time favorite pieces of pop culture.

Here in its final days we see revealed more than ever its classic cowboy sensibilities

of a man at the edge of the wilds.

A showdown between the man and the myth.

But who will remain when the blood, grit and dust has settled?

Who will be remembered?

Say. My. Name.

"I met a traveller from an antique land
Who said: `Two vast and trunkless legs of stone
Stand in the desert. Near them, on the sand,
Half sunk, a shattered visage lies, whose frown,
And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command,
Tell that its sculptor well those passions read
Which yet survive, stamped on these lifeless things,
The hand that mocked them and the heart that fed.
And on the pedestal these words appear --
"My name is Ozymandias, king of kings:
Look on my works, ye Mighty, and despair!"
Nothing beside remains. Round the decay
Of that colossal wreck, boundless and bare
The lone and level sands stretch far away."

Percy Bysshe Shelley —

Midnight Radio – Hedwig and the Angry Inch

Midnight Radio

I can't believe it's already been 5 years. Our first dance at our wedding was set to Origin of Love.

Because love is not about conquest or sacrifice or submitting to some higher being.

Love knocks down the wall.

I spent far too much time building that divide, between myself and the pieces of myself I couldn't bare to hope for.

But then she came into my life and the bricks crumbled to dust.

In that warm embrace we are free to be ourselves.

"And you were so much more than any god could ever plan, more than a woman or a man.

And now I understand how much I took from you:

That, when everything starts breaking down, you take the pieces off the ground

And show this wicked town something beautiful and new."

Do it With a Rockstar - Amanda Palmer

"Smile— the end is near and it's high time. The light's amazing, man.

So time your Instagram, the rapture swallowing the land.

But we're the last ones laughing. Pictures or it didn't happen."

— Amanda Fucking Palmer, Smile

I realize that my art is a much more direct reference of a reference than most.

When people ask, I am happy to share where all the pieces came from and how they came to dance together:

Most people will just nod and process the flood of info they weren't really ready for.

Some people really get into it and an intense hour-long conversation can pass in an instant.

Others get angry, because digital and collage and reproducible and probably cause they didn't think of it first.

No apologies here.

Go make your own art.

My favorite ones just walk up to a piece, laugh and smile. Those are the people that really get me.
