David: warrior and poet king

Musashi: warrior, poet and sage

A child saddled with great names has little choice but to aspire to greatness…

"Happy is the man who has not followed the council of the wicked,

or taken the path of sinners, or joined the company of the insolent.

- David HaMelekh -

Psalm 1.1, Tanakh Translation

“People in this world look at things mistakenly,

and think that what they do not understand must be the void.

This is not the true void. It is bewilderment...”

Some Battles are fought long after the War.

It is for us, the survivors of history, to decide where we go from here.

Chasing Smoke – Princess Mononoke Nouveau

Posted on December 6, 2012

"Chasing Smoke", ©MMXII

I first saw Princess Mononoke as part of an outing with the Anime Club in high-school. The Art Institue of Chicago was holding a special screening at a time when anime had never seen major distribution in America. In the late 90s, if you wanted anime or manga, you were going to have to work for it. The lights went out and Yo-yo Ma's strings set every otaku's teeth on edge. Equal parts history and legend, the story captured the hearts of audiences around the world.

Featured on Tokyo Pop:

"Princess Perfection - Writing about this Princess Mononoke print by David Tanimura is a difficult proposition because it's so freakin' mesmerizing that we keep staring at it instead of finishing our senten- seriously, would you just look at it already? Tanimura perfectly captures the essence of the film and the nouveau aesthetic suits the Studio Ghibli eco-epic surprisingly well. Now if you'll excuse us, we need to go re-watch Princess Mononoke because reasons."

Miyazaki's epic masterpiece remains my favorite films of all time.
